The former palace of Prince Boun Oum na Champassak — a grand building mixing colonial and Lao styles, now a hotel where visitors can look around the lobby or stop for a drink.
The palace is the most imposing building in central Pakse. It was built for Prince Boun Oum na Champassak, heir to the former Champasak royal line and a leading Lao politician of his day. Construction began in the late 1960s, but the building was still unfinished when the prince left the country in 1975 after the change of government. It was later completed, renovated and converted into the Champasak Palace Hotel.
The architecture blends colonial-era design with Lao elements — layered roofs, long arched verandas and carved woodwork inside. The lobby and wide halls still convey a sense of past grandeur, and the slightly time-worn details only add to the vintage charm that photographers love.
You do not need to stay the night to visit: you can usually look around the lobby, photograph the façade, or sit down for a coffee or a drink in the hotel's restaurant or bar (subject to what is open at the time). Please be considerate of hotel guests and stay out of private areas and guest-room floors.
Tips: late afternoon light is best for photos of the façade. The palace is close to Route 13 near the bridge over the Sedone River — about a 10-minute walk from the riverside area. Neat, modest clothing is appreciated inside the hotel.
