A scatter of islands where the Mekong is at its widest. Don Det is the laid-back favourite for hammocks, bike rides through rice fields and Mekong sunsets — 15 minutes by boat from Nakasang.
Si Phan Don — “Four Thousand Islands” — is where the Mekong spreads up to about 14 km wide in the wet season just before it enters Cambodia, broken into countless islands, rapids and rocks. Don Det and neighbouring Don Khon are where most travellers stay. The two are linked by an old French railway bridge, built in the colonial era to haul cargo around the impassable Khone Phapheng falls.
Life on Don Det is simple: swing in a hammock on a riverside bungalow porch, cycle around the island past rice paddies and villages, see the old locomotive and railway bridge, walk to Li Phi falls on Don Khon (separate Don Khon entry fee), kayak, or take a sunset boat trip. Don Det’s west side is the sunset side; the east side faces the sunrise.
At the southern tip of Don Khon there is a viewpoint over the Irrawaddy dolphin pool on the Lao–Cambodian border, but sightings have become very rare and may not happen at all — treat it as a scenic boat trip rather than a dolphin-watching guarantee.
There is no reliable ATM on the islands: withdraw cash in Pakse or Nakasang before crossing. Power and internet can be patchy, and some tracks turn to mud in the rainy season. November–February has the best weather, but riverside bungalows can fill up early in the cool season.
