A pre-monsoon rain-making festival where Mekong villages launch home-built bamboo rockets, with dancing parades, mor lam and plenty of muddy mischief.
Boun Bang Fai is held before rice planting to remind the sky god Phaya Thaen to send the rains. Villages around Champasak town and along southern Route 13 parade decorated rockets with dancers and mor lam bands before hauling them onto bamboo launch towers. The rocket that flies highest and longest wins — and teams whose rockets fizzle are cheerfully thrown into the mud.
Tips: stay behind the barriers set by marshals, as rockets can veer off course. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, and hire a vehicle for the round trip as return transport is scarce. Ask your guesthouse in Champasak which village is launching that weekend.
Dates follow the Lao lunar calendar and are sample data — verify with organisers / the Champasak tourism office. (Each village holds its own date.)
