The start of the three-month Buddhist Lent — offerings of Lent candles and rain-season robes, dawn alms and an evening candle procession at Wat Luang, Pakse.
Khao Phansa falls the day after the full moon of the eighth lunar month, when monks begin three months of retreat in their temples for the rainy season. Pakse residents carry large carved Lent candles, rain-season bathing robes and other offerings to the temples. Alms are given at dawn outside Wat Luang on the Xe Don, and in the evening people walk three times around the ordination hall with candles.
During Lent many families give up alcohol and weddings are not held, so town life becomes quieter.
Tip: it is the rainy season — bring an umbrella or rain jacket. Remove your shoes before entering the hall and photograph discreetly without blocking the procession.
Dates follow the Lao lunar calendar and are sample data — verify with organisers / the Champasak tourism office.
