On the full moon of the tenth month, families prepare baskets of food that are given to monks by lottery, dedicating merit to the departed — two weeks after Khao Padap Din.
Boun Khao Salak follows on from Khao Padap Din. Each family prepares a basket or tray of rice, dishes, fruit, sweets and daily necessities and writes its name on a slip; the monks then draw lots to decide which family's offering each receives. The merit is dedicated to deceased relatives.
At Wat Luang in Pakse the courtyard fills with colourful baskets, and the morning is the best time to come, followed by a sermon and a shared meal. By now the Mekong is in full flood and preparations for the Ok Phansa races are under way — in the evening you'll often see crews practising on the Xe Don.
Tip: arrive early (around 7 am) and dress modestly. To take part, ready-made baskets are sold by shops around the temple.
Dates follow the Lao lunar calendar and are sample data — verify with organisers / the Champasak tourism office.
