Post-harvest merit-making on the threshing grounds of villages around Champasak town — blessing the rice spirit, monks' chanting and a shared village feast.
Once the rice has been cut and threshed in the second lunar month, farmers in the villages around Champasak town pile the grain on the threshing ground and invite monks to chant blessings. This is Boun Khoun Lan — a thank-you to the rice goddess Mae Phosop and a prayer that the granary will last the year. There is a sou khouan ceremony for the rice spirit, white cotton strings tied around wrists and a meal shared by the whole village.
Each village picks its own date; the tourism office and guesthouses in Champasak town can often arrange a respectful visit.
Tip: go with a local guide or your guesthouse owner, ask before photographing, bring a small offering (rice, snacks or money in an envelope) and dress modestly.
Dates follow the Lao lunar calendar and are sample data — verify with organisers / the Champasak tourism office.
