In the fourth lunar month, Champasak's old temples hold the all-day recitation of the Vessantara Jataka in 13 chapters, with a procession welcoming Prince Vessantara back to town.
Boun Pha Vet is one of the twelve traditional Lao merit-making festivals (heet sipsong) and tells the story of Prince Vessantara, the Buddha's last life before enlightenment, who gave away everything he owned. In Champasak town it begins in the evening with the "Pha Vet returns to town" procession, carried from the rice fields into the temple to drums and gongs. The next day monks take turns chanting the 13 chapters in a melodic style from before dawn until dusk, while villagers offer "thousand balls" of sticky rice and flowers.
It is a community temple event rather than a tourist show — ideal if you want an intimate glimpse of Lao Buddhist life. Afterwards, stroll past the French colonial houses along the Mekong.
Tip: take off your shoes before entering the sala, sit with your feet tucked away from the monks and give a small donation if you wish.
Dates follow the Lao lunar calendar and are sample data — verify with organisers / the Champasak tourism office.
