On the same full moon as Vientiane's That Luang festival, Wat Luang in Pakse holds wax-castle processions, dawn alms and a riverside temple fair.
Wat Luang, built in 1935 on the bank of the Xe Don, is Pakse's principal temple and home to a monastic school. On the full moon of the 12th lunar month — the same night as That Luang in Vientiane — Pakse holds its own annual merit-making fair here.
In the evening, wax castles (phasat pheung, frames decorated with wax flowers) are carried in a candle-lit procession around the ordination hall. On the full-moon morning, sticky rice is offered to monks outside the temple, while the grounds and the riverside road turn into a fair with rides, dart games, sweet stalls and a mor lam stage.
Tip: dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). To join the alms round, buy sticky rice from vendors near the temple, sit lower than the monks and avoid flash photography in their faces.
Dates follow the Lao lunar calendar and are sample data — verify with organisers / the Champasak tourism office.
