The full moon of the sixth month marks the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing — morning alms and a candle-lit circumambulation around the giant Buddha on Phou Salao hill, high above the Mekong.

Visakha Bucha is one of the holiest days of the Lao Buddhist year, and people head to the temple from early morning. In Pakse the most beautiful place to mark it is Wat Phou Salao, on the hill across the Mekong, where a giant golden Buddha gazes down over the town.

In the morning there are alms and sermons. At dusk, people carry flowers, incense and candles three times around the great Buddha while the lights of Pakse and the Lao–Japanese bridge come on below — a calm and moving scene.

Tip: drive up (cross the Lao–Japanese bridge and turn up the hill) or walk the stairway in about 15 minutes. Bring mosquito repellent, dress modestly in muted colours and, by custom, avoid alcohol on this day.

Dates follow the Lao lunar calendar and are sample data — verify with organisers / the Champasak tourism office.
