On 2 December Pakse is decked in flags, with a flag ceremony, cultural performances and an evening fair.
Lao National Day commemorates the founding of the Lao People's Democratic Republic on 2 December 1975. In Pakse there is a morning flag ceremony in front of the provincial hall, followed by school parades and folk dances from Champasak's ethnic communities. In the evening a fair and concert stage open by the Mekong.
It is a public holiday — banks and government offices close, though most shops and markets stay open.
Tip: you are welcome to photograph the ceremony, but stand still and respectfully during the national anthem. Withdraw cash in advance as banks are shut.
