The end of Buddhist Lent in Pakse — full-moon alms, then long-boat crews from all over Champasak race on the Xe Don just above its mouth on the Mekong.

Ok Phansa is the biggest event of the year in Pakse town. On the full moon of the 11th lunar month, families in their best traditional clothes give alms at Wat Luang and the other temples along the Xe Don; after dark, candle-lit boat floats and lanterns drift on the river.

The next day is Boun Suang Heua, the boat-racing festival. Long boats with 30–50 paddlers from villages across the province race in pairs on the Xe Don between the bridge and the river mouth, to the beat of drums and roaring crowds. Food stalls line the riverside road, and stages with live music and folk games keep going late into the night.

Tips:

  • The best viewing spots are the bank in front of Wat Luang and the Xe Don bridge — arrive before 9 am.
  • Hotels in town fill up and prices rise, so book ahead.
  • Always agree the tuk-tuk fare before getting in; traffic is heavy and fares surge.
  • Dress modestly in temples and keep an eye on your bag in the crowds.

Dates follow the Lao lunar calendar and are sample data — verify with organisers / the Champasak tourism office.
