Boun Pi Mai Lao (Lao New Year) in Pakse 2027

Pi Mai falls in mid-April, the hottest time of the year. In Pakse, the first day is for cleaning the house and carrying Buddha images out to be bathed at Wat Luang and at Wat Phou Salao, the giant golden Buddha on the west-bank hill. There is a Miss New Year (Nang Sangkhan) parade along the main streets, sand stupas are built in temple courtyards and families hold baci blessing ceremonies.

For three or four days the Mekong road and the main crossroads turn into a water battlefield, with pick-ups full of water barrels, DJ stages and restaurants open late. Many Thai visitors cross at Vang Tao – Chong Mek to join in.

Tips:

• Carry a waterproof pouch for your phone and passport; wear clothes that can get soaked but are not revealing.
• Splash gently — never at monks, elderly people or motorbike riders.
• Do not drink and drive: road accidents spike during Pi Mai.
• Hotels, minivans and fares cost more, and banks close — bring cash.
