On Ok Phansa night, temples and neighbourhoods parade illuminated fire boats and set them adrift on the Mekong, followed by thousands of banana-leaf floats.
Lai Heua Fai is an offering to the river and to the naga spirits on the full-moon night of Ok Phansa. Pakse's temples and neighbourhoods build boats from bamboo and banana stems, decorate them with candles and lamps — often in the shape of a naga — and parade them along the Mekong road before launching them after dark.
Once the fire boats have drifted away, people release small banana-leaf floats (kathong) with flowers, incense and a candle, making a wish and letting misfortune float off downstream. Candlelight on the Mekong with the Lao–Japanese bridge lit up behind is one of the loveliest sights in Pakse.
Tip: find a spot on the riverside embankment from about 6 pm. Floats are sold by roadside vendors (sample price 10,000–20,000 LAK). Never release sky lanterns near houses or power lines.
Dates follow the Lao lunar calendar and are sample data — verify with organisers / the Champasak tourism office.
