See in the new year on the Mekong — Lao pop concerts, a food market and midnight fireworks over the Lao–Japanese bridge.
On 31 December the Mekong riverside road in Pakse becomes a walking street with concert stages for Lao pop stars and local bands, grill stalls, Beerlao and desserts. Pakse families, Thai visitors who crossed at Chong Mek and backpackers all count down together.
At midnight, fireworks burst over the Mekong with the Lao–Japanese Friendship Bridge as the backdrop.
Tips:
- It gets very crowded — watch your belongings and agree a meeting point.
- Tuk-tuk fares soar after midnight: agree the price first, or stay within walking distance.
- The Vang Tao – Chong Mek border is busy over New Year, so allow extra time.
