A cool volcanic plateau 1,000–1,300 m high — home of Laos’ best coffee, dozens of waterfalls, cafés in nature and ethnic-minority villages.
The roof of southern Laos
The Bolaven Plateau is a vast volcanic tableland east of Pakse spanning four provinces (Champasak, Saravan, Sekong and Attapeu), with Paksong as its main town. At roughly 1,000–1,300 m it stays cool all year — nights in December–January can drop to around 10 °C — and it is one of the wettest places in Laos.
Laos’ coffee capital
French colonists introduced coffee in the early 20th century, and the red volcanic soil and cool climate have made Bolaven arabica and robusta the most prized coffee in the country. Today smallholder farms, cooperatives and laid-back cafés in nature line Route 16, serving cups with views of forest and drifting mist.
Peoples and culture
The plateau takes its name from the Laven people, its original inhabitants; it is also home to the Alak, Katu, Suay and other Mon-Khmer groups. Some villages are still laid out in a circle around a communal house, with buffalo-sacrifice posts and spirit shrines. Visit with a local guide or a community-based tour and always ask before taking photos.
The Bolaven Loop
The classic Bolaven Loop (Pakse – Paksong – Tha Teng – Sekong – Tad Lo – Lao Ngam – Pakse) takes 2–4 days by motorbike, past dozens of waterfalls, coffee farms and ethnic villages. Short on time? A one-day mini loop covers Tad Pha Suam, Tad Champee, Tad Fane, Tad Yeung and a Paksong coffee farm.
When to go and tips
November–February is cool, dry and coincides with the coffee harvest. The rainy season (June–October) makes the waterfalls spectacular but brings slippery roads, thick fog and plenty of leeches. Pack a warm layer, rain gear and leech socks, and carry enough kip in cash — ATMs are scarce outside Paksong.
