Twin streams plunging more than 120 m into a jungle gorge — the tallest falls in southern Laos — seen from the resort-side viewpoint or from a zipline across the gorge, about 38 km from Pakse.
The tallest falls in southern Laos
Tad Fane is formed by two streams (the Huay Champi and Huay Phak Kood) that reach the edge of the Bolaven Plateau side by side and drop together more than 120 m into a deep gorge inside the Dong Hua Sao National Protected Area. Mist often hangs in the valley in the morning, making the two white ribbons of water look as if they are floating above the forest.
Views and activities
The classic viewpoint is on the resort side, where the Tad Fane resort’s restaurant and café terraces face the falls head-on — perfect for a cup of Paksong coffee with a view. Thrill-seekers can ride the zipline across the gorge for a bird’s-eye view of both cascades, and fit hikers can trek down to the base or up to the top of the falls with a local guide.
When to go
Flow is strongest from the late rainy season into the early dry season (July–November). From December to April skies are clearer but the falls are thinner. Come in the morning before afternoon cloud rolls in, and combine the visit with Tad Yeung, only about 2 km away.
Safety tips
The trails into the gorge are steep and the rocks extremely slippery, especially in the rainy season — stay well back from the cliff edge and never swim near the top of the falls. Leeches are common in the forest, so wear leech socks or long trousers. The plateau is several degrees cooler than Pakse; bring a light jacket and a rain shell.
