The provincial museum on Route 13, displaying artefacts from Wat Phou and Oum Muang, textiles and jewellery of the Bolaven Plateau’s ethnic groups, and the story of the Champasak kingdom.
The Champasak Historical Heritage Museum is a compact museum on Route 13 in Pakse — a good primer before heading south to Wat Phou and the rest of Champasak province. The displays are fairly simple, but several pieces are hard to see anywhere else.
The highlights are artefacts from archaeological sites in the province: carved lintels, fragments of sandstone sculpture and inscriptions from the Wat Phou area and Oum Muang (Tomo temple), which show how deeply ancient Khmer culture shaped this region. Another section covers the textiles, costumes and silver jewellery of the ethnic groups of the Bolaven Plateau, together with musical instruments and traditional household tools.
The history galleries trace the Champasak kingdom from its foundation through the French colonial period to modern times, using old photographs and documents. Some labels are only in Lao or carry brief English captions, so it helps to read up beforehand or visit with a guide.
Tips: allow 45 minutes to an hour. Opening hours can be irregular, with a lunch break and closures on public holidays, so a weekday morning is the safest bet. Photography may not be allowed in some rooms — ask the staff first.
