Pakse’s largest market, packed with local produce, sinh textiles, souvenirs, Bolaven coffee and street food — at its busiest early in the morning.
Daoheuang Market (often called the "New Market") is the largest market in Pakse and the commercial hub of Champasak province. Traders from villages across the Bolaven Plateau and from over the Thai border all sell here. The market spreads across a main building and rows of outdoor stalls, covering everything from vegetables, fruit, meat and Mekong fish to clothes, electronics and gold.
For visitors, the highlight is the textile section: hand-woven and machine-woven sinh skirts in countless patterns, scarves, and crafts made by ethnic minority groups. You can also buy Bolaven coffee — whole roasted beans or ground — by the bag, usually cheaper than in souvenir shops, along with seasonal produce from the plateau such as durian, avocado and passion fruit.
Early morning (roughly 06:00–09:00) is when the market is at its busiest and most atmospheric. Try a Lao breakfast — feu noodle soup, khao piak, a baguette sandwich (khao jee pâté), or sticky rice with grilled chicken — washed down with strong Lao coffee and condensed milk. Fresh-food stalls start packing up after midday, but clothing and household sections stay open until late afternoon.
Tips: carry small Lao kip notes; most stalls take cash only, though some accept Thai baht or QR transfers. Polite bargaining is normal for textiles and souvenirs. Watch your valuables in the crowds. The market is next to the VIP bus station and the Daoheuang tuk-tuk stand, so it is easy to drop by before or after a bus journey.
