The roughly 1.4 km bridge over the Mekong, opened in 2000, links Pakse with the west bank and is a favourite spot for sunset photos and bike rides.
The Lao–Japanese Friendship Bridge (often called the Lao–Nippon Bridge locally) spans the Mekong just south of central Pakse. Opened in 2000 and roughly 1.4 km long, it was built with Japanese government assistance and is one of the key Mekong crossings in Laos, making the trip from Pakse to the Vang Tao–Chong Mek border and the west of the province far easier.
The Pakse end of the bridge and the nearby riverbank are popular viewpoints: the long span stretches across the river, with the hill and golden Buddha of Wat Phou Salao in the background. At sunset the orange-gold light on the water makes for beautiful photographs, and in the dry season the falling river exposes sandbanks and small fishing boats.
A favourite activity is cycling or riding a motorbike across the bridge and then continuing up to Wat Phou Salao for the view from above. Watch out for fast-moving trucks and buses on the bridge — keep to the side and never stop for photos in the traffic lane.
Tips: arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset and bring mosquito repellent, as the riverside gets buggy after dark. It combines naturally with Wat Phou Salao and the Pakse Mekong riverside in a single evening.
