A hilltop temple on the west bank of the Mekong, crowned by a giant golden Buddha facing the river — the best viewpoint over Pakse and the Lao–Japanese Friendship Bridge, especially at sunset.
Wat Phou Salao sits on a hilltop on the west bank of the Mekong, directly across the river from Pakse. Its signature is a giant seated golden Buddha gazing out over the Mekong towards the town; it can be seen from the Pakse riverside and from the Lao–Japanese Friendship Bridge, and has become the city's best-known modern landmark.
From the Buddha's terrace the panorama takes in the broad curve of the Mekong, the mouth of the Sedone River where it joins it, the rooftops of Pakse and the long span of the Friendship Bridge. On a clear day you may make out the rising edge of the Bolaven Plateau far to the east. Smaller Buddha images and statues are scattered across the hillside around the main platform.
There are two ways up: by road, with a car park close to the summit, or on foot via a long staircase from the base of the hill — steep enough that you should bring water and take your time. The best time to come is about an hour before sunset, when the golden light catches the statue and the river; early morning is cooler and quieter.
Getting there: cross the Lao–Japanese Friendship Bridge to the west bank and follow the signs up the hill (about 15 minutes from the town centre). If you go by tuk-tuk, charter it for the round trip and agree how long the driver will wait — there are rarely any vehicles for hire at the top. Entry is free (donations welcome). It is an active temple with resident monks, so dress modestly.
