Medical care in the area
- Champasak Provincial Hospital (central Pakse) — the province's main hospital, with emergency and accident care.
- Private clinics and pharmacies — plentiful in Pakse; basic medicines are easy to buy.
- District hospitals — in Paksong, Champasak town and Muang Khong (Don Khong) provide basic treatment only.
Referral to Thailand
Serious illness or injury is usually referred to hospitals in Ubon Ratchathani (about 2.5–3 hours via the Vang Tao border). You will need your passport and should know the border hours — travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is essential.
Risks to know about
- Dengue — common in the rainy season; use repellent day and night.
- Malaria — low risk in towns but present in remote forested areas; ask your doctor before travelling.
- Schistosomiasis (Schistosoma mekongi) — found in the Mekong around Don Khong and Si Phan Don; avoid wading or swimming in still water near the banks.
- Rabies — don't play with dogs or monkeys; if bitten, wash the wound at once and see a doctor.
- Food and water — drink bottled or filtered water; be careful with raw laap and raw fish (liver-fluke risk).
- Heat — drink plenty, especially at Wat Phou and on the islands in April.
