Money, ATMs & Payments in Pakse

Kip is king. ATMs are plentiful in Pakse but scarce on the islands — plan your cash before heading to the Bolaven Plateau or Si Phan Don.

Currency

The official currency is the Lao kip (LAK). Common notes: 1,000 / 2,000 / 5,000 / 10,000 / 20,000 / 50,000 / 100,000 LAK. Some shops in Pakse accept Thai baht or US dollars, but usually at a poor rate.

Sample rates: 1 USD ≈ 21,500 LAK · 1 THB ≈ 650 LAK (sample — real rates change daily).

ATMs in Pakse

  • Plenty of BCEL, LDB, JDB and other bank ATMs, especially along the riverside, Route 13 and around Daoheuang market.
  • Sample limits of 1,000,000–2,500,000 LAK per withdrawal, with a fee of about 20,000–40,000 LAK each time (sample data).
  • Paksong and Champasak town have only a few ATMs — they can run out of cash or be offline.
  • Si Phan Don: Don Det and Don Khon have few or no reliable ATMs. Withdraw in Pakse or Nakasang before you board the boat.

Exchanging money

Exchange shops and banks in Pakse offer better rates than the border or the islands. Bring clean, untorn foreign notes with no writing on them.

Paying by QR

BCEL OnePay and other Lao bank QR codes are widely used in Pakse restaurants, cafés and shops, but most tuk-tuks, songthaews and boats take cash only. Cards are accepted only at some larger hotels (often with a 3–5% surcharge).

Tips

  • Carry 5,000–20,000 LAK notes for transport and entry fees.
  • Take enough cash for 2–3 days before heading to Si Phan Don or riding the Bolaven Loop.
  • Count your change — several kip notes look alike.
