Pakse City (Mekong lowlands)
Hot and humid most of the year. Dry-season days are around 28–32°C; April is the hottest month. Sightsee in the early morning and late afternoon.
Bolaven Plateau (Paksong, ~1,000–1,300 m)
- 5–10°C cooler than Pakse; nights in December–January can drop to about 10°C — bring a warm layer.
- One of the wettest places in Laos: afternoon rain most days in the wet season, and morning fog.
- Waterfalls (Tad Fane, Tad Yeung, Tad Pha Suam) are at their best from July to November; coffee harvest runs roughly November–February.
Southern Champasak & Si Phan Don
- Wat Phou: hot with strong sun — go early in the morning. The Wat Phou Festival is around February.
- Si Phan Don: in high water (Aug–Oct) Khone Phapheng and Li Phi falls are at their most powerful, though some small islands flood. In the dry season (Mar–May) the river drops, exposing rocks and sandbars, and boats may take detours.
Tips
- Boun Ok Phansa (late October) brings boat races in Pakse — rooms fill up fast.
- In the rainy season Bolaven dirt roads turn to mud — allow extra time.
- Sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water all year round.
