Li Phi (Somphamit) Falls

ຕາດລີ່ຜີ (ຕາດສົມພາມິດ)

Overview

About this place

Wide, raging Mekong cascades on Don Khon whose name, “Li Phi”, comes from the belief that the rapids trap spirits; walkways and viewpoints line the falls — no swimming.

Li Phi, also called Tad Somphamit, is a line of rapids several hundred metres long on the western side of Don Khon, where a whole arm of the Mekong squeezes violently through channels in the rock. The roar is constant all year and most dramatic at the end of the rainy season.

“Li Phi” means “spirit trap”: locals believe the rapids catch the souls of the dead drifting down the river, so treat the site with respect. Some villagers still set traditional bamboo fish traps in the channels — a fascinating glimpse of Mekong river life.

Today the area is a landscaped park with walkways, a suspension bridge, viewing pavilions, restaurants and a small sandy beach downstream (in the dry season). You can walk to several viewpoints along the rapids; allow 1–2 hours.

Never swim anywhere near the rapids — the currents and undertows are deadly, and even at the beach caution is essential. October–December brings the most water. Depending on the period, the falls ticket may be combined with or separate from the Don Khon island fee — check on site.
