Getting to Pakse

Visas & Entry

Visa exemptions, visa on arrival and e-Visa — what to know before entering Laos at Pakse Airport, Vang Tao or Nong Nok Khiene.

Updated October 18, 2026

Visa exemptions

Citizens of many countries (including ASEAN members such as Thailand and some others such as Japan) are visa-exempt for short tourist stays. The number of days depends on nationality — please check the official Lao immigration sources or an embassy before you travel.

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Pakse International Airport, Vang Tao and Nong Nok Khiene (please verify first).
  • Bring: a passport valid for at least 6 more months, 1–2 photos and US dollars in cash (sample: about 30–45 USD depending on nationality).
  • Usually a 30-day tourist visa.

e-Visa

  • Apply online only through the official Lao PDR e-Visa website — beware of intermediary sites charging high fees.
  • Print the approval and enter through a port that accepts e-Visas.
  • A good option if you want certainty before you travel.

Overtime fees

Land borders may charge a small overtime fee outside office hours and on holidays — keep small notes handy.

Extending your visa in Pakse

Extensions can be requested at the Champasak provincial immigration office in Pakse (check current hours and fees). Overstays are fined per day.

Tips

  • Keep photos of your passport photo page and visa on your phone.
  • Rules can change without notice — always double-check before travelling.
