Operators

The main Lao operators — such as Unitel, Lao Telecom (LTC) and ETL — have shops in Pakse (along Route 13 and near Daoheuang market).

Buying a SIM

  • Your passport is required for registration.
  • Sample tourist packages: 50,000–100,000 LAK for 7–30 days of data (sample data).
  • Top up at convenience stores, grocery shops or via BCEL OnePay.
  • eSIMs for Laos are sold online — check that your phone supports them.

Coverage by zone

  • Pakse City: good 4G coverage.
  • Bolaven Plateau (Paksong): fine in town and along Route 16, but weak at some waterfalls in the valleys.
  • Champasak & Si Phan Don: usable on Don Det, Don Khon and Don Khong, though it can slow down in the evening.

Wi-Fi

Most hotels, guesthouses and cafés have free Wi-Fi. On the islands it can be slow or drop during power cuts.

Tips

  • Download offline maps and your Driver Card before leaving town.
  • Check that your phone isn't network-locked before you travel.
  • A power bank is essential on waterfall or motorbike days.
