Your itinerary
Day 1
- 08:00 Stay 45 min

Start before the heat. Wat Luang (built 1935) sits on the Sedone riverbank and runs a monastic school — mornings are calm, with chanting from the halls. Cover shoulders and knees.
- 09:00 Stay 1 hr 30 min

Southern Laos’ biggest market: fresh produce, Paksong coffee beans, sinh skirts and breakfast stalls. Try khao piak sen or a khao jee pâté baguette. Agree the tuk-tuk fare before you get in.
- 10:45 Stay 1 hr

About a 10-minute walk from the market (or a short tuk-tuk hop). Stone inscriptions, Bolaven ethnic jewellery and finds from Wat Phou give good context for the rest of your trip.
- 12:00 Stay 1 hr 15 min
4. Champasak Palace Hotel (Prince Boun Oum’s Palace)

The former palace of Prince Boun Oum na Champassak, now a hotel. Admire the architecture and lobby, have lunch nearby and sit out the midday heat before heading west.
- 16:30 Stay 1 hr 30 min

Cross the Lao–Japan Friendship Bridge to the west-bank hilltop and its giant golden Buddha facing the Mekong. Arrive about an hour before sunset and ask your tuk-tuk to wait (agree the waiting fee first).
- 18:15 Stay 40 min

An evening stroll along the Mekong promenade as the breeze picks up and locals come out for aerobics; the night food market is a few minutes’ walk away.
- 19:00 Stay 1 hr 30 min

7. Pakse Riverside Night Food Market

Finish with street food: grilled meats, laap, papaya salad, sticky rice and a cold Beerlao. Bring small kip notes — most stalls are cash only.
