Overview
About this place
Visit family coffee farms around Paksong, follow the bean from cherry to roast and taste fresh arabica and robusta — harvest season runs November to February.
From cherry to cup
French colonists brought coffee to the Bolaven Plateau in the early 20th century, and the volcanic soil and cool climate made Paksong the heart of Lao coffee country. Farmers grow aromatic arabica, punchy robusta and even some rare liberica, and many smallholder families now welcome visitors to their farms.
Farm tours
A typical tour lasts 1–2 hours: walk among shade-grown coffee trees, learn how the red cherries are picked, sun-dried, hulled, sorted and traditionally roasted in an iron wok, then finish with a side-by-side tasting of fresh brews. Some farms also offer homestays, Lao cooking classes and short walks to small waterfalls nearby.
Seasons and festival
The harvest runs roughly November–February, when the trees are heavy with red cherries and you can try picking yourself. The Bolaven Coffee Festival is usually held in Paksong around December, and in March–April the farms bloom with fragrant white coffee flowers.
Tips
Buying beans directly from farmers supports the community — expect around 60,000–120,000 LAK per half kilo depending on quality. Ask your Paksong guesthouse to contact a farm in advance. Many farm tracks are unpaved, slippery and leech-prone in the rainy season, so wear closed shoes and bring a warm layer.
