As the first floods bring fish migrating up the Mekong — demonstrations of traditional fishing gear, small-boat races and a market of dried fish and padaek.
The rapids of Si Phan Don form one of the world's great fish-migration bottlenecks. Muang Khong on Don Khong celebrates its fishing heritage with demonstrations of li bamboo fish traps, cast nets and basket traps, small-boat races between villages, padaek (fermented fish) making and an exhibition on sustainable fisheries and fish conservation zones.
Tip: the boat from Ban Hat Xai Khoun to Muang Khong takes only a few minutes. Rent a bike to circle the island and try salt-grilled fish by the river at sunset.
