The former royal seat of Champasak — a sleepy one-street town on the Mekong lined with French colonial villas, perfect for bicycles and the natural base for Wat Phou.
Champasak town was once the centre of the Kingdom of Champasak and the residence of its royal family until the mid-20th century. Today it is a small, unhurried town strung out along a single road on the Mekong’s west bank — a world away from busy Pakse.
The highlights are the French colonial villas with louvred shutters, wooden balconies and stucco details, including former residences of the Champasak royal family (view them from outside only — many are still private homes). Add a few small Buddhist temples, a morning market and riverside cafés where you can watch the sun set over the Mekong.
The best way to explore is by bicycle: rent one from your guesthouse, ride through town in the cool of the morning or evening, then pedal about 10 km to Wat Phou, or hop on a boat to Don Daeng island in the middle of the river. November–February has the most pleasant weather.
Choice of restaurants and rooms is limited and ATMs are few, so bring cash from Pakse. During the Vat Phou Festival (around February) rooms sell out — book ahead.
