Vat Phou (Wat Phou) Temple Complex

Vat Phou is the heart of the "Champasak Cultural Landscape", inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. The site’s origins go back to around the 5th century — before the Angkorian era — and most of the sandstone buildings you see today date from the 11th–13th centuries, making the complex well over 1,000 years old. It was first dedicated to Shiva, with the natural lingam-shaped summit of Phou Kao behind it regarded as sacred, and later became a Buddhist temple that Lao pilgrims still visit today.

The visit follows an ancient processional axis: from the great baray (reservoir), along a causeway lined with boundary stones, past the north and south sandstone palaces, then up a steep stone stairway shaded by frangipani trees to the main sanctuary on a hillside terrace. Look for lintels showing Shiva, Vishnu and Indra riding the three-headed elephant Airavata. Behind the sanctuary a sacred spring trickles from the cliff, and nearby are rock carvings of a crocodile and an elephant.

An electric shuttle runs from the ticket building to the baray, and a small exhibition hall near the entrance gives useful background. Around the full moon of the third Lao lunar month (usually February) the Vat Phou Festival brings tens of thousands of worshippers, folk games and a big fair — rooms in Champasak town fill fast and transport prices rise.

Come early (08:00–10:00) before the heat builds: the stairs are steep and shade is limited. Bring water, a hat and shoes with good grip, and never climb on the ruins or take stones away as souvenirs.
