Kiet Ngong Elephant Village & Xe Pian Wetlands

Ban Kiet Ngong sits on the edge of the Xe Pian National Protected Area, one of the largest protected areas in southern Laos. It is surrounded by wetlands and marshes that shelter many species of waterbird. Families here have kept elephants for generations for forest and farm work, and a community-based tourism programme channels visitor income back into the village.

The best activities are guided walks with local guides through the wetlands, early-morning birdwatching, boat or canoe trips on the marshes, and watching elephants in their natural setting — grazing, bathing or walking alongside their mahouts. History fans can hike up Phou Asa, a hill topped by mysterious old stone walls with sweeping views over the wetlands.

A note on elephant welfare: rides — especially with heavy seats (howdahs) — can strain an elephant’s back and health. We recommend observation and walking-with-elephants activities instead, and choosing operators who limit the animals’ working hours, provide water and shade, and do not use hooks harshly. Always ask before you book.

The best time is the early dry season (November–February), when trails are dry and migratory birds are around. In the rainy season some paths flood and leeches appear; wear closed shoes and bring insect repellent.
